Villain Overview

Eeyah ha ha ha!
~ Cackletta's signature laugh.
Eeeyah ha ha ha ha! Who would have thought you'd catch up to the Great Cackletta in even a hundred million years? (Bowser: You! You're the fiend who stole Peach's voice! How dare you pull off such a cool evil plan?) Eeyah ha ha ha! Oh, I dare! And now I'm going straight back to the Beanbean Kingdom so my next plan can take root! I have no time to chat with the likes of you! Fawful! Take care of this!
~ Cackletta when meeting Mario, Luigi and Bowser for the first time on the Koopa Cruiser.

Cackletta, also known as Bowletta after possessing Bowser, is the main antagonist of the 2003 role-playing game Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga and its 2017 remake of the same name, as well as the overarching antagonist of Minion Quest: The Search for Bowser.

She is an evil witch from the Beanbean Kingdom who sought to awaken the legendary Beanstar in order to fulfill her desire of world domination, later possessing Bowser's body after nearly dying, usurping his troops in order to achieve this same purpose. She is also the archenemy of both Queen Bean and her son, Prince Peasley, as well as the former master of Fawful.

Biography[]

Past[]

Beanbean lore states that only one with a beautiful voice can activate the Beanstar's mysterious powers to grant any wishes. Cackletta hoped to use this power to conquer the Beanbean Kingdom and soon after, the Mushroom Kingdom both for herself.

Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga[]

Cackletta and Fawful appear at the beginning of the game as they arrive at Princess Peach's castle disguised as the Goodwill Ambassador from the Beanbean Kingdom with a chest, claiming it to be a gift from Queen Bean to strengthen their kingdom's ties to the Mushroom Kingdom. As Princess Peach takes a look at the chest, it opens up to reveal gas that sprays Princess Peach in the face, tranquilizing her and taking away her voice, replacing it with explosives. Cackletta soon reveals herself, shocking all the Toads and making a cruel introductory feature by attacking them with her magic. She then proceeds to make her getaway with Fawful, having gotten what she needs.

Cackletta appears before Bowser, Mario, and Luigi for the first time on their Koopa Cruiser where she entrusts Fawful to take care of them before leaving. Fawful, filled with rage after being trounced by the Mario Brothers, ultimately succeeds in his objective, taking them out and causing Bowser’s ship to crash with his fury.

At the Beanbean Kingdom, Cackletta is disguised as the Goodwill Ambassador again, this time to trick Mario and Luigi into fixing the Kingdom's plumbing, which is actually a ruse to deactivate the Beanstar's security system. Mario and Luigi quickly discover Cackletta's trickery as they find the real Goodwill Ambassador trapped in the sewers and rush to the throne room where the Beanstar was. However, they are too late as Cackletta and Fawful make their escape with the Beanstar and leave Queen Bean to deal with them, who has been transformed by ingesting a Belly Blech worm that also made her crazily enraged.

Cackletta and Fawful later invade Woohoo University for its research and technology to build robots to contain Princess Peach's voice called "Peach-Bots." As soon as Mario and Luigi arrive, Cackletta activates her Peach-Bots to speak to the Beanstar, only to make the Beanstar angry as it smashes through a floor grate, creating a giant hole beneath it, where it and the Peach-Bots fall into, which she finds to her dismay seconds later. It is later revealed that Toadsworth and others of the Mushroom Kingdom managed to avoid the plot by switching Peach with Birdo, who they dressed up like Peach. As a result, the Beanstar is furious by Birdo's voice and did not help Cackletta at all. Before she and Fawful can flee, they are cornered by the Mario Brothers and Fawful ends up being Hammered into the ground by Luigi. Frustrated and needing to take her anger out on something, Cackletta attacks with the intention of "knocking them all the way back to the Mushroom Kingdom." However, they triumph and Cackletta is left so badly injured that she cannot move. In order to save her, Fawful absorbs Cackletta's body into his headgear and is commanded to commence one more attack, but he is stopped by Prince Peasley, who rapidly attacks them with his sword and knocks them out of Woohoo University.

Sometime later, they find King Bowser of the Koopa Kingdom lying unconscious in Stardust Field when Fawful puts Cackeletta's ghost into Bowser's body and thus, the birth of "Bowletta". Now that Bowletta can control Beanbean minions and Bowser's minions, she is more powerful than ever and plots to steal the Beanstar again and get the real Peach's voice. She succeeds in kidnapping Princess Peach as she steals the Koopa Clown Car and finds the Mario Bros. in the Little Fungitown immigrant community with Peach.

Since Mario is sick from Bean Fever and Luigi is out trying to cure him, Bowletta is able to kidnap Peach easily, but her escape is witnessed by a shocked Luigi during his return with a Bean Fever cure. Bowletta then sends holographic messages to Beanbean Castle informing the Mario Bros. to fix the broken Beanstar and bring it to Joke's End where they will trade for the Princess' safe return. Prince Peasley has a plan to give her a fake Beanstar and meet them at the top of Joke's End. As the Bros. finally make it up to the top of Joke's End, Luigi gives Fawful the fake Beanstar, but Fawful attacks Luigi, as he expected a trick and steals the real one from their briefcase.

Mario and Luigi then realize that Bowletta will not really return Princess Peach to them, so they come up with an idea. A few minutes later, when Mario approaches Bowletta and Fawful along with Princess Peach, he starts laughing as another Princess Peach appears beside him, who tells Bowletta that the Princess Peach she kidnapped is an imposter, shocking her. Bowletta then drops the Peach she's holding and grabs the other. As she and Fawful escape on the Koopa Cruiser, they question Princess Peach why she's holding her mouth. As she doesn't respond, Bowletta scares her to reveal the big mustache of Luigi's, as it turns out to be him the whole time.

Luigi sheds his disguise and escapes with the Beanstar but, rather than going after him, Bowletta goes into Bowser's Keep to launch an air assault and conquer the Beanbean Kingdom with sheer brute force. After she successfully destroys Beanbean Castle Town, the Mario Bros. go to Hoohoo Village and tell Blablanadon that Bowser's Keep is overhead and that he should now take them up. Fawful then informs Bowletta that the Mario Bros. are coming and Bowletta orders the original seven Koopalings and Fawful to guard her castle. The Bros. fight and defeat them all, eventually confronting and defeating Bowletta in the throne room but she is able to knock them out with a Time Bob-Omb and inhale them to consume via her soul. However, this gives the Mario Brothers the chance to defeat Cackletta’s ghostly remains inside her body. After a long and hard battle, Cackletta's Soul is destroyed and it cringes in pain as purple energy swirls around it and makes it implode before Bowletta coughs up Mario and Luigi and collapses on the floor in agony. In her final moments, she expresses her disbelief for losing to them in spite of all her effort and power. Bowletta then expels Cackletta’s Soul, which fades away into non-existence and Bowser is restored, putting an end to the mad witch for good.

Battles[]

First Stand at Woohoo Hooniversity[]

During her first battle, Cackletta is fought at Woohoo Hooniversity, where she has 300 HP, 30 - 58 attack, 74 defense and 90 speed. She starts off the fight by growing and sending dark portals at the Bros while lightning strikes all around. If either brother falls into the portals, they will be inflicted with Heavy Gravity, making the victim's commands even stricter.

After the attack she reverts back to normal size and can use either a lightning attack or a duplication move. During her lightning attack, she will fire 3 series of lightning bolts that the Bros must jump over, strikes both targets every time, but whom she will strike first is telegraphed by which arm she raises first. Her right arm means she'll start with Mario, her left arm means she'll target Luigi and if she raises both arms then both Bros must jump at the same time. During her duplication move she can summon 2 clones and move around and stay on the field to confuse the Bros as to which one is the real Cackletta. If the Bros hit the real Cackletta the duplicates will disappear, but if they hit a clone it will laugh and explode into a swarm of Cackletta bats that they must jump over to avoid, with the bats having a chance of inflicting Poison if they're touched. If Cackletta uses her lightning attack while the clones are out, each Cackletta will attack once, with the real one always raising both arms.

After losing most of her HP, Cackletta will become enraged, gaining a power boost and staying in her larger form, only using the Dark Portals attack until she is defeated.

Rematch at Bowser Castle[]

Phase 1 (Bowletta)[]

During her second battle as Bowletta, Cackletta is fought at Bowser's Castle, where she has 500 HP, 140 attack, 180 defense and 150 speed. While in her normal form she can be damaged by thunder, heals from fire and is able to use either a Flaret barrage attack or a fire breath attack. During her Flaret barrage attack, she spits out Flarets which will either fly at the Bros and explode or land in front of her and remain on field after the attack. The remaining Flarets have 10 HP, are healed by both fire and thunder and can either roll at either of the Bros or heal Cackletta. During her fire breath attack, Cackletta will lower two blocks above the Bros that they must hit to break while she charges up her fire breath for 5 seconds, with them being unable to jump over it if they can't break the blocks in time. The blocks need to be hit 5 times at first but increases by 1 for every time she uses the attack. If this attack is used while any Flarets on on the field, they will be destroyed by her fire breath.

After losing around 250 HP, Cackletta will start using a dark form that she can transition in and out of. As Dark Bowletta her speed is reduced to 80, she can no longer be jumped on, heals from thunder and can be damaged by fire. In this form she can only use a Starstorm attack where she fires out a bunch of colored shooting stars that can be knocked back at her with hammers to deal damage. The stars' target depends on their color; red stars go for Mario, green stars go for Luigi and yellow stars don't target either.

Once she loses all of her HP, Cackletta pretends to be defeated while a Time Bob-omb sneaks up on the heroes and blows them up, reducing their HP to 1. She then inhales the Bros, leading to her second phase.

Phase 2 (Cackletta's Soul)[]

During her second phase, Cackletta uses her own soul to fight the Mario Bros. Due to starting the battle with 1 HP, the Bros must immediately heal on their first turn. Cackletta is stronger than ever in this form and has access to a wide range of powers, gaining more abilities throughout the fight. The Bros must destroy her head and arms to expose her heart, with it having 1200 HP, 150 defense and 90 speed. The heart will regenerate all of Cackletta's appendages on its first turn and heal them each turn until it recedes back into her chest. After all of the heart's HP is depleted, Cackletta's Soul will explode, causing Bowletta to spit out the Bros and she will be defeated for good.

Cackletta's left hand is weak to thunder and heals from fire, while her right hand is weak to fire and heals from thunder. Each hand has 80 HP, 100-150 attack, 150 defense and 90 speed. Her hands have 2 attacks that use both hands and each hand also has its own elemental attack. Her most common attack is using both of her arms to try and flick the Bros. If one of her arms is destroyed or her heart's HP has been depleted a bit, her arms will move back-and-forth between the Bros to try and confuse which one she is targeting. If neither of her arms are destroyed Cackletta can also use an arm swing attack where she sweeps the ground with her arms and changing direction a few times. If her eyes are pointing down her arms will be lowered and must be jumped over, but if her eyes are pointing up the Bros must stay still as her arms will be raised.

She can use her left hand can summon a lightning orb which will need to be hammered as it bounces back and forth between the brothers, requiring only 2-3 hits at first but gradually increasing to 5 as the heart loses HP. She can also use her right hand to summon two two balls of fire which spin in a circle around the Bros and must be jumping over, changing direction a few times before disappearing.

Cackletta's Head is weak to both thunder and fire and has 200 HP, 100-150 attack, 150 defense and 120 speed. If it is attacked while the arms are exposed, her arms will immediately retaliate regardless of turns and use either by trying to flick the Bros or sweeping the floor. Her head starts off the fight with only two abilities but gains more moves gradually as the heart loses more HP. She can use the crystal on her forehead to either lightly heal or buff the power of her head or arms. She can also use an energy ball attack where she spits out a massive energy ball that will fall on one the Bros unless it is hammered 4 times.

After the heart loses 25% HP, she can use a Fawful duplicate attack where she spits out a purple copy of Fawful that fires out a barrage of energy balls that must be jumped over, afterwards he will fly close and must be hammered or else he will quickly fly away and repeat the attack.

After the heart loses 50% HP, she can use an Aura Barrage attack where she summons a bunch of blue auras that teleport around the field before either disappearing or turning red or green and must be hammered back at Cackletta to deal damage.

After the heart loses 75% HP Cackletta begins using an eye beam attack where she will point her eyes up and down before stopping time and firing lasers from her eyes in those directions and repeats this 3-5 times every turn she uses the attack. Her left eye corresponds to Mario and her right eye to Luigi, with them having to jump if the eye is pointing down and stay still if it is pointing up.

Other Media[]

Super Smash Bros.[]

In Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Cackletta appears as a sticker, who can boost any fighter's flinch resistance.

Personality[]

While little is known about her past and why she became evil, Cackletta was seen as an evil, smart, yet insane witch who wishes to rule over everything. She was normally seen with Fawful who seemed to be the only one to mutually enjoy company with her. Despite that, she wasn't a protective villain as even though she respects Fawful, it rarely if ever translates to going out of her way for him in any measure. She easily became angered and confused when something goes wrong as she planned things out (in her mind) perfectly. Because of this, she was easily surprised until the end of the game, when she started to expect the unexpected. She was also seen to be very patient and even-tempered when it came to Fawful helping her with her plots but wanted to kill anyone else who questioned her.

Forms[]

  • Lightning Bolt Summoning: Cackletta can summon purple lightning out of the skies to strike her enemies and was powerful enough to send a room full of Toads flying with one hit each.
  • Shadow Portal Creation: Cackletta can reach a hand out and summon dark energy portals out from under her for the Mario Bros. to fall into which then drop them from a great height to injure them.
  • Duplication: Cackletta can create multiple versions of herself to fool the Mario Bros, the only way to tell them apart being that the real one laughs at the start of her battle.
    • Bat Attack: Cackletta's clones, if her true form is not attacked, will transform into bats and fly in an overwhelming swarm at the Bros. In many ways, this is the strongest attack she possessed in her original form due to the amount of bats making it very hard to dodge the attacks.

  • Fireballs: Bowletta possesses one of Bowser's signature attacks in that she can fire fireballs at her enemies.
  • Flaret Projection: During her fireball attacks, Bowletta can spit up flaming rocks (known as Flarets in the game's enemy targeting system) that, if the Mario Bros. do not destroy some with their Hammers (since jumping will burn the Bros.), she will absorb to regain 30 HP.
    • Flaret Projectiles: Instead of absorbing them, Bowletta can send the rocks as projectiles to try and hit her enemies.
  • Jump Block Summoning: Bowletta can summon blocks that prevent the Bros. from jumping high into the air until they are hit multiple times. Every time that they are used by Bowletta, the amount of required jumps increases by one.
    • Fire Waves: Bowletta, having trapped the Bros. momentarily, will charge herself up (represented by a quickly shrinking bubble over her body) and then fire a massive wall of fire at both Bros. at once in this form's most devastating attack.
  • Fire Immunity: Using Mario's Firehand on Bowletta will restore 30 Hp. However, the Thunderhand will do critical damage.
  • Dark Bowletta Transformation: Bowletta can change herself into an unnamed darker form which gives her two new powers but consumes an entire turn.
    • Thunder Immunity: Dark Bowletta is now immune to the Thunderhand and restored 30 HP when attacked by it in this form. However, the Firehand is now her main weakness.
    • Meteor Slam: Dark Bowletta's signature attack where can now summon red, green, and yellow star shaped meteors to attack the Mario Bros. Red stars hit Mario, green will hit Luigi, and yellow always strike around them without doing damage to either.
    • Bowletta Transformation: Bowletta can transform back into her normal form at will but loses a turn in the process.
  • Time Bo-Bomb Summoning: As revealed at the "end" of her boss battle, Bowletta had summoned a Time Bo-Bomb from off-screen to take out the Bros. with one hit. This is unavoidable and scripted due to it taking more than the (presumed) four turns that the Time Bo-Bomb would grant them.
  • Inhalation: In a manner similar to Bowser two games later, Bowletta was able to inhale the Mario Bros. after her Time Bo-Bomb knocked them out.

  • Mario Bros. Consumption: When confronting the Bros. in her soul form, she proclaims that she will consume them after defeating them.
  • Durability/Near Invincibility: The only way to defeat Cackletta's Soul is to strike her heart (which only unveils itself after all of her external limbs and head have been destroyed). The heart itself has 1200 HP and requires about 10-12 turns to destroy.
    • Limb Recovery: One turn after her heart has been exposed, her limbs and head will reappear and the heart will vanish two turns after that. The heart will continually regenerate her limbs and head until it disappears.
  • Elemental Attacks: Cackletta's Soul has a fire hand and a thunder hand (similar to Mario and Luigi's own afore-mentioned Firehand and Thunderhand) that grant her the following elemental abilities. The powers vanish after the destruction of their respective elemental arms but return when the arms are recovered.
    • Fire Summoning: Using her Firehand, Cackletta's Soul can click her fingers and summon fire to circle around the Bros. They go twice clockwise, switch directions, go four times anti-clockwise, and then disparate. This attack ends sooner in the remake.
    • Thunder Ball Conjuring: Cackletta's Soul can click her thunder arm's fingers and summon a massive ball of thunder to fly at the Bros. which they must snack back and forth between each other until it dissipates. In the remake the ball gradually becomes closer every time the bros hit it.
    • Fire and Thunder Immunity: Cackletta's Soul regains 30 HP to her limbs if the Firehand is used on her fire arm or the same with her thunder arm and Thunderhand, as well as her heart being immune to both.
  • Eye Blasts: Cackletta's Soul can twirl around her eyes for a moment before firing very dark red lasers out of them that do devastating damage to the Bros. if they make contact. If she looks up before firing them, she will fire at the ground but will fire above the standing Bros. if she continues looking forward. She will use this attack sooner in the remake.
    • Time Stop: During her eye blast attack, Cackletta's Soul will stop time before firing, causing the music to stop and the bros to freeze in place.
  • Arm Swing: Cackletta's Soul will occasionally stretch out her arms and spin them repeatedly, trying to Trip the Bros. If the arms are up, remain standing but jump if they are down whilst avoiding any in the air beforehand. This attack gets faster the longer that it goes on.
  • Fawful Summoning: Cackletta's Soul, when enraged, will spit a purple energy version of Fawful out of her mouth which will then fire purple energy balls that the Bros. have to jump to avoid.
  • Saturn Blasts: Cackletta's Soul can open her mouth and summon a projection of either a red ringed planet (resembling Saturn) or a blue non-ringed planet (resembling Uranus) into it. The planet would then appear above the Bros. and the red ones would go in to attack with the blue never attacking and being an attempt to trick the player into giving an opening for the red planet to attack. There is no definitive way to end this attack as, like the Arm Swing attack, it ends when Cackletta chooses to stop it.
  • Extinction Ball: Cackletta's Soul's most devastating attack of all that she only uses when down to her final 200 HP. Cackletta's Soul will charge up her mouth with red energy and then spit up a glowing orange and red energy ball into the air to descend on the Bros. This must be hit into the air multiple times, the descent getting quicker every time, until it disappears.
  • Fury Mode Activation: In the remake, once Cackletta's Soul's heart has been brought to half health, she will enter her Fury mode which raises all of her stats and speeds up most of her attacks.

    Quotes[]

I wish to improve my kingdom's ties with the Mushroom Kingdom. I bring a gift from Queen Bean.
~ Cackletta's first words (as the fake Beanbean ambassador) whilst Fawful presented thier "gift" to Peach. Said gift was actually the latter's signature vacuum helmet.
Eeyah ha ha ha! The Beanstar and Princess Peach's voice are already mine! Say, Mario Boys, you haven't bothered to pay a visit to your host, Queen Bean... I thought you had better manners! Wouldn't you agree, Queen Bean? Perhaps the three of you can sit down over tea to discuss the finer points of foreign policy! Eeyah ha ha ha!
~ Cackletta to Mario and Luigi as she summons the corrupted Queen Bean to battle them after stealing the Beanstar at Beanbean Castle.
Hah! Hmph! Well, won't this be fun! Oh, yes! If that's how it is, I'm ready for you! I'm going to knock you all the way back to the Mushroom Kingdom!
~ Cackletta engaging the Mario Bros.
Graagh! Eeyaa...ha...hohhh... H-How could this happen?!?
    ~ Cackletta upon being defeated.
Oh... Oh... Oh, Fawful!!! Give them one final...attack for me!
~ Cackletta after being absorbed by Fawful and her final words before transferring bodies.
Eeeyah ha ha ha ha! Excuse me? Bowser??? Oh, I think you're sorely mistaken. I'm... Bowletta!!!
~ Bowletta's first words upon unveiling herself during the attack on Toad Town.
Eeyah ha ha ha! At last... At long, long last... I have in my possession both the Beanstar and Peach's voice!
~ Cackletta gloating to Fawful after they captured "Peach" (Luigi in disguise) the Beanstar at Joke's End.
You've done well to make it here! I should have expected as much from the superstars of the Mushroom Kingdom! Unfortunately for you, those who desire to disrupt my plans have very short futures! After conquering the Beanbean Kingdom, I intent to make the Mushroom Kingdom mine as well! My new country has no need for old superstars! It will do just fine with only one: the Great Bowletta!!!
~ Bowletta before her final battle.
Are you still conscious? Ugh! You are a persistent pair! I shall dispose of you quickly, and then eat you for lunch!
~ Cackletta's Soul starting the actual final battle.
EEYARGH! It can't be!!! Impossible!!! I... No... How could I... And to this filthy little pair... HOW COULD I LOSE???
    ~ Cackletta's last words.

    Trivia[]

    • Her name comes from "Cackle" and the Italian suffix "-etta".
    • Although not appearing nor mentioned in Bowser's Inside Story, Cackletta is alluded to in some moments in the game such as:
      • A slight rearrangement of Cackletta's theme plays after Fawful takes over Princess Peach's Castle in Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story, and about 48 seconds in the "Deep Castle" music, a small part of Cackletta's theme can faintly be heard.
      • Towards the end, after Fawful partly absorbs the Dark Star's power, he dons on a robe that slightly resembles Cackletta's.
      • In the 3DS remake Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story + Bowser Jr.'s Journey, Dark Fawful's theme is a slower rendition of Cackletta's battle theme from Superstar Saga.
    • Cackletta was also the first villain in a Mario game to take control over one of the main characters (Bowser), with the others being the Shadow Queen (Princess Peach), Dimentio (Luigi), and Elder Princess Shroob (Bowser).
    • In prototype, it was revealed that Cackletta was younger sister of Queen Bean who, for unknown reasons, deeply got envious of her.
    • In the international version of Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga, due to a glitch, Cackletta gives 900 EXP (3 times more than she is supposed to) upon defeat in her first fight. This is equivalent to bosses near the end of the game. This was fixed in the Japanese version.
