Butch the Bulldog

Butch the Bulldog is a supporting villain of the Mickey Mouse franchise. He is a vicious bulldog who is mostly Pluto's arch-nemesis where he is the main antagonist of the Pluto cartoons. He is also Peg Leg Pete's pet, as revealed in Mickey Mouse Clubhouse.

His vocal effects were provided by the late Clarence Nash, and currently by Frank Welker. He was also voiced by Jim Cummings in Chip 'n Dale Rescue Rangers.

Personality[]

Butch is aggressive, mean, moody, vicious, gluttonous, greedy and angry. He maybe an ordinary bulldog, but he has done stuff that normal dogs would never do as he has engaged in committing evil deeds such as theft, kidnapping, etc., indicating that he is a villain and actually goes beyond a simply aggressive animal. In fact, he even tricked Pluto's little brother into stealing wieners.

He always antagonizes Pluto even when Pluto has done nothing wrong. However, he, not only antagonizes Pluto, but also antagonizes other characters such as Donald Duck and Figaro the Cat.

Although Butch is bigger and stronger than Pluto, he often fails possibly because Pluto is more clever or Butch has a lack of intelligence.

Despite being a villain, he is sometimes neutral, and nowadays he became less antagonistic then he was before, and seems to be more neutral, but it is unknown if he is redeemed or not. In addition, he was depicted as a hero in Chip'n Dale Rescue Rangers, which was the only time Butch was a hero. Other than that, Butch is not a hero in the rest of his appearances.

Appearance[]

Butch is a slender gray bulldog with a dark gray muzzle and a red collar with gold spikes.

In Mickey Mouse Clubhouse and Mickey and the Roadster Racers, Butch is brown rather than gray. He still has his red collar in Mickey Mouse Clubhouse and Mickey and the Roadster Racers, but the spikes on his collar have a different colour which is somewhat white. It is possible that Butch's brown skin colour is his new colour and seems to no longer have his gray skin colour.

He resembles other cartoons bulldogs such as Spike from Tom and Jerry and Hector from the Looney Tunes Sylvester and Tweety cartoons.

Walt Disney's anthology series[]

In the Disneyland episode "Donald's Award", he antagonizes Donald Duck over the cat puppet he uses to distract Pluto.

Chip 'n Dale Rescue Rangers[]

Butch is featured in the episode "Robocat", in which he has a more relaxed, sarcastic personality and speaks with a sort of gangster accent. It is owned by a boy named Freddy and his snobbish rich father, the latter of whom is also allergic to cats, and as a result, Butch often kicks the cats out of their home.

When Fat Cat and his gang try to steal Luna (an expensive and rare tropical fish also owned by Freddy's father), Butch chases Fat Cat and his gang out of the house before they can do it. Later, when a robot cat breaks into their house to steal Luna for Fat Cat, Butch is again ordered to defend the fish. Butch does so at first, but after seeing how powerful the robot is, he plays dead to avoid another confrontation. The robotic cat leaves with Luna, and Butch reluctantly follows.

In the city, he encounters a Lifeguard, who exchange information about the robot (real name is Tom). With Fat Cat having to seize Tom, the Rescue Rangers tell Butch to bring his master to a cat food cannery on the outskirts of town. Butch returns to his house and gets Freddy and his father to follow him. He leads them into town and suggests Luna to be in the sewers (after the Lifeguards helped her escape Fat Cat by sending her down the drain into the sink).

Freddy climbs into the sewers to go see Luna, leaving his worried father with Butch. When Freddy nearly falls into the sewers, he is saved by Tom (whom Dale has transformed back into his normal friendly self). Freddy's father and Butch witness this rescue, and Butch speaks directly to Freddy's father, assuring him that Tom is rescuing Freddy and not harming him. Freddy's father actually hears and acknowledges Butch's dialogue, but Butch pretends he didn't say anything and tries to hide the fact that he was just talking to the man.

While the Lifeguards rescue Luna and Freddy rescues Tom (who fell into the water while rescuing Freddy), Butch and Freddy's father open the hatch to get everyone out of the sewers.

Mickey Mouse Works[]

Butch is featured in the Pluto cartoons as the main adversary/obstacle that Pluto faces. He was first seen in the cartoon "Pluto's Arrow Error", where he and Pluto compete for the love of the dachshund Dinah.

Mickey Mouse Clubhouse[]

In the CGI series, Butch is revealed as Pete's pet and has brown fur in contrast to his gray fur from previous roles. Here, Butch is featured as Pete's closest friend and sidekick. He first appears in the episode "Pluto's Best", where he and Pluto competed in a dog show. Butch was later seen in the episode "Pluto's Bubble Bath" where he and Pete are making sandcastles when Mickey and Pluto arrive floating in bubbles. Pete and Butch use a beach towel to cover a nearby cactus to prevent them from falling. Also in this cartoon, Pete reveals that Butch is actually a Labrador. A picture of Butch and Pluto was seen in the episode "Mickey's Surprise Party" as part of a puzzle.

The Wonderful World of Mickey Mouse[]

Butch appeared twice in the episode "School of Fish", first in Mickey's flashback to his traumatic first day of school when a dog chases him, and later as a dogfish attempting to eat Mickey.
