Bethany was a psychotherapist in Gotham City and conducted mental experiments with Simon Stagg that created Magpie. Unknowingly, Bethany hired Magpie under the guise of "Cassie" as a secretary and Magpie studied Bethany long enough and finally abducted her since he wanted her to reverse the experiments that erased her memory. Fortunately, Batman and then Lieutenant James Gordon rescued Bethany.
Bethany later asked Bruce Wayne out on a date and Bruce was happy to accept. However Bethany was working for the League of Assassins and lured Bruce to a trap set by them. Bethany's soul was then drained by Lady Shiva and imprisoned within the Soul Taker Sword.
