~ Silk commending about himself. |
Aristides Silk is a minor antagonist of the 1943 Tintin comic book, The Secret of the Unicorn, and its 2011 film adaptation. He is a pickpocket known for stealing wallets until his arrest.
He was portrayed by Toby Jones, who also played the Dream Lord in Doctor Who, Lanfranco Cassetti in Agatha Christie's Poirot, Arnim Zola in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Alfred Hitchcock in The Girl, Culverton Smith in Sherlock and Gunnar Eversol in Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom.
Biography[]
Silk first appeared as a marketplace where he managed to steal wallets from several citizens without being noticed, an act witnessed by Snowy, the pet dog of the journalist boy Tintin. He later appeared trying to steal a wallet from the detective duo Thomson and Thompson, though this failed as they strapped an elastic band to the wallet, forcing Silk to escape, but not after he steal Tintin's wallet after bumping into him by accident.
Silk later appeared returning to his apartment, where he is confronted by Thomson and Thompson, who has gotten hold of Silk's wallet as he lost it during the scuffle. They made their way into Silk's apartment where they saw numerous wallets in his possession (including Tintin's). Unable to realize Silk is the pickpocket, the policemen thought he was just a collector and warned him about the thief, describing him as a master criminal. Offended, Silk finally confessed to being the pickpocket, although claiming to be just a kleptomaniac and not a bad person and tries to justify his urges to steal wallets. However, Thomson and Thompson don't listen to him, instead finding their own wallets (which they still think belong to someone with the same name) and end up arguing about how their respective names are spelled. Out of patience, Silk surrenders himself to the detectives in order to make them stop arguing and is subsequently arrested.
Personality[]
While in the comic book he seems to show shame and remorse when he's found out as a pickpocket, in the film he's much more proud of collection and remembers where he stole every wallet in it, having even stolen the wallet of another pickpocket actually pickpocketing at the time and is excited to show them to Thomson and Thompson, only to become upset when they don't listen to him and instead argue about their duo dinamics, being whiling to let them arrest him so they would shut up. In either adaptation, however, he doesn't like to be treated as a bad person for this, as his mental disorder makes him unable to resist the urge to steal any wallet that catches his attention.
