Anarky wants to purge Gotham of its corruption, but his methods involve mass destruction. His idealism is matched with a self-importance that makes reasoning with him nearly impossible. He needs to be dealt with physically and imprisoned to keep this city safe. Should be approached with caution.
~ Anarky's bio.
One mask and jacket belonging to Anarky aka Lonnie Machin. I wasn't even a cop when this kid tried to hit Gotham. No one's seen him since. No one knows where they're keeping him. I guess the government don't like anarchists too much.
~ Aaron Cash about Anarky in Batman: Arkham Knight.

Lonnie Machin, better known as Anarky, is a minor antagonist in the 2013 video game Batman: Arkham Origins.

He is an anarchist, terrorist and political activist in Gotham City who aimed to overthrow the city's governmental and corporation systems, viewing them as the sole reason for the city's long history of corruption and organized crime. His extreme methods, including illegal bombings and attempted mass murder, pit him against Batman.

He was voiced by Matthew Mercer, who also voiced Ganondorf, Security Chief Atlas, Lucifer, Prince Diamond, Gangplank, Kiritsugu Emiya, Kilrogg Deadeye, Goro Majima, and Zato-1.

Biography[]

Past[]

Lonnie Machin's past is unknown but he at some point became disillusioned with how things were run in Gotham City. Knowing about the deeply rooted police and government corruption in the city, Lonnie decided that he wanted to destroy it and donned an anarchist mask and outfit after apparently being inspired by the Batman. Machin set up his base in the abandoned Solomon Wayne Courthouse and gathered an army of like-minded followers. However, his methods involved destroying any institution that he viewed as corrupt and killing everyone inside to create a proverbial clean slate.

At an unknown point, Anarky made a call to Captain James Gordon in an attempt to convince him into leaving the GCPD while he still can as he does have a spotless record but he is still in his view "a cog in the machine." Gordon tried to track down Anarky by tracing the call but Anarky hung up before the trace could be completed. Anarky's group then was infiltrated by hobo informants to the police in exchange for meals and lighter prison sentences.

Arkham Origins[]

On Christmas Eve, Anarky can be first heard broadcasting his propaganda across Gotham City as Batman exits the The Final Offer to reach Lacy Towers. Anarky contacts Batman immediately after he leaves the Final Offer and his projection tells Batman that 3 Bombs have been planted around Gotham City and gave Batman the choice to defuse them or allow them to blow up. After speaking to an "Anarchist" located just above the projection, Batman manages to race through the city to the Gotham Bank in the Plaza where the Dark Knight was capable of successfully defeating Anarky's followers and defusing the first bomb.

A second Anarchist, located in the Diamond District, informs Batman the second bomb's location and Batman repeats his last method of defeating the guarding thugs and defusing the Bomb. The third and final Bomb is located in the GCPD Building and the third Anarchist tells Batman of it's location. One final time, Batman takes down the gang of Anarky's followers and defuses the Bomb, but this time Batman receives instructions to confront Anarky at the Solomon Wayne Courthouse to "continue Gotham's trial."

After taking out a gang of Anarchists at the back entrance of the Courthouse, Batman finally finds Anarky who suggests they should work together. Batman refuses because of his extreme methods so the Anarchists attack and Anarky eventually joins the melee using an Electric Baton. Batman manages to defeat Anarky and remove his mask, revealing he is just a teenager. Although he tries to reason with the anarchist, Machin refuses to see reason since he just sees Batman as implicit so the vigilante ties up Anarky and leaves him for the GCPD. Although the GCPD don't pick him up for several hours due to the chaos caused by the Joker, Anarky's followers never come to rescue him and he remains there for the rest of the night. After Anarky is arrested, his followers leave 24 logos around the City.

Cold Cold Heart[]

Even after his capture, Anarky's followers continue to cause several riots in South Gotham and set up bombs on New Year's Eve. Batman manages to handle the riots and then defuses an explosive. They then rig the communications band to automatically activate the remaining explosives but Batman disables their communication channel transmitting a soundbite of Anarky's creed. Afterwards, they leave 12 logos throughout Gotham before disbanding.

Arkham Knight[]

Ten years after Anarky's arrest, the GCPD has placed his mask and jacket in the GCPD Evidence Lock-up. However, the anarchist's location is unknown since he apparently disappeared whilst in prison. Aaron Cash believes that Machin was transferred to a government black-site as the government does not like anarchists and don't want his rhetoric spreading.

Personality[]

Lonnie Machin is a delusional and ruthless psychopath who had honorable motives in wanting to destroying Gotham City's corruption and make it a better place to live. However, his methods involve terrorist bombings and mass murder with him viewing anyone who tried to stop him as just part of the larger problem and implicit in everything he hates. He is also a self-important egotist who refuses to admit that he's wrong and just blames everyone else for his failure. When the Batman refused his offer of an alliance, Anarky was visibly dismayed and upset at his idol before proving to be very paranoid in thinking that the world was out to get him.

Victims[]

Victims killed by Anarky
  • Multiple GCPD officers
  • Multiple Black Mask thugs
  • Multiple Bane thugs
  • Multiple Blackgate staff

Quotes[]

Oppressed citizens of Gotham, your cries for help have been heard! I am Anarky - voice of the people - here to save you from the plague of corruption that now infests this once proud city! Those hired and elected to keep us free and safe won't lift a finger! And why would they? They've been bought and paid for; encouraged to turn a blind eye. If they won't act, I will. At dawn's first light - the sources of Gotham's ruin WILL. BE. DESTROYED. Now, back to your regularly scheduled programming of propaganda and consumerist garbage.
~ Anarky's first speech to Gotham City.
Hello, Batman. I was hoping to get a minute of your time. See, I've got a story to tell you. About crime and violence. Greed and vengeance. But it's also a story of redemption. Of second chance. Of change. I've planted 3 Bombs where Gotham's corruption is at it's strongest. But unlike those I fight to overthrow, I believe in choice. So I offer you one: let them detonate or stop them. Your actions will determine what I do with you.
~ Anarky when meeting Batman.
They say money makes the world go round. But it also makes for excellent shackles. You're tied to your job. Your mortgage. Your need to buy the next shiny thing your overpriced television seduces you with. Imagine what we could accomplish, if only someone would set us free!
~ Anarky's speech while Batman fights with the anarchists around the first bomb.
You're drawn to me. Go on, admit it. Like little moths to the light. Flit on over. You want to know what I'm selling. And if you don't? Too bad. You can't shut me off any more than you can the billboards. Or the branding on your clothes. The fliers that litter the streets. Or the sound-bites that clog the air. I'm in your face. I'm in your head. Just like them! But I'm the menace? Here I am, trying to educate. But you don't want to hear it. You just want to buy it. But only if everyone else does too.
~ Anarky's speech during his second projection.
Gotham is a prison and the police its wardens. To protect and serve, their motto goes. And they do. Protect and serve THEMSELVES. We live in fear of their gaze. Their billy-clubs and guns. When they walk down the streets, we avert our eyes. We tremble when they speak. Who are these people, really? What drives them? Is it justice? Honour? No. They want power and the badge gives it to them. And so those we look to for protection-instead inspire fear.
~ Anarky's speech during his third and final projection.
Anarky: Interesting. Even after knowing all you did about the places I targeted, you spared them.
Batman: Sorry to disappoint you.
Anarky: Disappoint me?! Not at all! Come on down to the Courthouse so we can continue Gotham's trial!
~ Anarky after the third bomb is defused.
Ah! I'm so glad you came. It's an honour really. We have much we need to discuss! I'd like to propose an alliance. I think the two of us could accomplish great things together.
~ Anarky when Batman arrived in the Solomon Wayne Courthouse.
Tell you what- I'll turn myself in as soon as you do the same. But you don't consider yourself a criminal, do you? The suit. The gadgets. The sense of entitlement. You're just another rich kid atoning for his fiscal sins. Such a shame.
~ Anarky's nervous breakdown after Batman refuses his proposal.
I looked up to you. Wanted to BE you. Guess that's why they say you should never meet your heroes...
~ Anarky as his followers attacked.
Alright, that's it! Do they own you then? Is that it? Are you getting paid to bring me in? I don't get it. We're on the same side here!
~ Anarky when joining the fight against Batman.
So? What does it matter? I wanted to make a difference. I thought you'd feel the same.
~ Anarky after being defeated as Batman realised he is a teenager.
Innocent?! They watched as Gotham went to hell and didn't do a thing! No! They're weak! And so are you.
~ Anarky when Batman pointed out that he almost killed innocent people.
You ever wonder how things got to be so bad here? I do. All the time. You see- I don't think men like Roman Sionis or Oswald Cobblepot are responsible. They're just a reflection of our apathy. Our greed. Our fear. We look the other way when things turn sour. Bury ourselves in our jobs. Consume propaganda masquerading as entertainment. The message is always the same: Don't think. Don't question. And what becomes of a society that's given up? It rots. Fills up with liars, cheaters, and thugs. Uptown and downtown. The suit in the penthouse is no better than the guy selling drugs on the corner. They're both doing whatever it takes to get ahead-never mind the cost. Fidelity. Once upon a time that's what defined society. People coming together in pursuit of common cause. To care for each other. To protect and provide. We took shelter from the darkness-and the things that roamed it. Community meant progress. But now...It's all backwards. We worship at the altar of competition. We build fortresses around ourselves. We fight. We betray. We have become the things we feared. You keep cleaning up after everyone Batman, and no one's going to learn to take care of themselves. The ones that don't hate you-they'll start to rely on you. Depend on you. And if something happens to you? If you get old? Or bored? Or die? Then what? Or do you not consider the world that revolves around you? You're a hypocrite. Running around 'dispensing justice'. Telling people what they can and can't do. You're ensuring Gotham's freedom-provided it conforms to your twisted view. Whatever pleases the Bat. That it? You're not a hero. You're a despot. You don't enforce justice. You suppress it. There's a way to make this work. To show you that we share the same goals. Maybe I took things too far with the bombs and the threats. I, I can learn from that. I mean, you could be a mentor to me. And maybe, well, maybe I can teach you something too. Because I think you're so busy playing hero you've forgotten what it's like for the rest of us. We're not all as strong as you. We don't have the fancy gadgets. The strength. The skill. But, but, but maybe that's the problem. You've gotten so used to the power, you think you're better than everyone. Above reproach. Is that it, then? We're not as good as you? You know what-I take it back. I don't want to work with you. You don't have anything to offer. I think I've figured it out. You didn't take me down because I broke the law. No. No, you took me down because you don't want the competition? That's what this is is really about isn't it. Let me ask you something-you ever wonder if YOU'RE the reason this city's so messed up? Because I have. A LOT of us have... And I'm starting to think we're right.
~ Anarky's monologue following his defeat.

Game Over Lines[]

We could have accomplished such great things together.
You think you're a hero, but you're really just a symbol of how low this City's fallen. We're better off without you.

Trivia[]

  • For a character who only appeared in Arkham Origins, Anarky is referenced quite a lot during Arkham Knight. A random thug can be overheard saying "Has anyone seen that Anarky guy? That kid would love this!". His mask can also be found in the G.C.P.D. evidence room with a recording from Aaron Cash saying that nobody knows what happened to Anarky after Christmas Eve, and was likely taken away by the government as they presumably take a major disliking to anarchists.
  • When the player accesses Anarky's radio channel (Freewave/Liberation Radio) on the cryptographic sequencer, Anarky can be heard reading "Plain Words", a factual left-wing sympathizing pamphlet that was made infamous after the factual 1919 United States anarchist bombings against a number of influential American political and social figures, including John D. Rockefeller. Anarky mentions how the pamphlet was over a hundred years old, but 'how its words still continue to make sense'.
  • During the boss battle with Anarky, he can be seen wielding a common stun baton. This is a reference to Anarky's primary weapon in the comics, which is a stun baton in the form of a golden cane.
  • During Arkham Origins, Anarky's real name (Lonnie Machin) wasn't revealed and wasn't in the character bios. However, in Arkham Knight, his name is revealed by Aaron Cash during a recording showcasing his equipment, which was held on display in the evidence room at GCPD lock-up.
  • His ideology mostly resembles insurrectionary anarchism, judging from his egoism and aggressive post-left thinking combined with radical economical collectivism.
