Stop hand

I sense a soul in search of answers.
~ Adria's catchphrase and her most famous quote.
They asked me what I see when I look into the fire. I see a burning man. I see a burning witch. I see terror and a hunger that will consume everything. What hope do the works of men have against such all-consuming hunger? I gave myself to the flames.
~ One of Adria's journal.

Adria is one of the secondary antagonists from the Diablo franchise, serving as the secondary antagonist in Diablo III and one of the main antagonist in the expansion Reaper of Souls.

She was a witch who arrived in Tristram prior to the cathedral's difficulties. Despite not being widely liked, she proved to be a valuable collaborator in investigating the malevolence within the cathedral. In the initial game, she served as the main vendor for magical items such as staves, tomes, mana potions, and spell scrolls. When Tristram was overrun, Adria departed before the demons arrived and devastated the town. In the third game, she was expecting Aidan's child, Leah.

Leah was entrusted to the care of someone else while her aunt, Adria, graciously adopted her niece, Deckard Cain. Their paths cross once again in Caldeum, where the Nephalem valiantly rescue Leah from the clutches of the serpent demons of Belial. Adria kindly guides Leah in harnessing her hidden powers and sends the heroes on a noble quest to revive Zoltun Kulle, the creator of a nefarious Black Soulstone designed to ensnare the souls of the seven Great Evils. In her pursuit of justice for the tragedies inflicted upon Tristram two decades ago, she declares her intention to eliminate the Black Soulstone entirely.

However, it should be noted that Adria may have had alternative motives. It is worth mentioning that she was once associated with the Dark Coven and made the journey to Tristram, lured by Diablo's immense power. During this time, she made a commitment to serve the Lord of Terror and ultimately gave birth to Leah, with the intention of utilizing her as a vessel for the resurrection of Diablo as the embodiment of all seven Evils combined, known as the Prime Evil. Adria's actions, which can be seen as a form of betrayal, serve as the catalyst for Act IV, the concluding act of the original game. However, it is not until Act V of the expansion Reaper of Souls that she reemerges, in pursuit of Malthael and the Black Soulstone, with the objective of bringing about Diablo's return.

She was voiced by Alyson Reed.

Personality[]

Adria was always straightforward and concise when interacting with others. She prioritized her time and didn't have much patience for those who were simply curious. Despite being in her thirties, she had beautiful raven-black hair, but as she reached her fifties, it began to turn gray. Even during the challenging times, she maintained a youthful appearance, which surprised others. However, she would respond frostily to anyone who inquired about her true age.

Cain observed that Adria had a consistent desire for power. According to Adria, power meant having the ability to utilize resources to achieve one's desires. She viewed the entirety of Sanctuary as a treasure trove that could be taken advantage of. Adria believed that every being, every plant, and every civilization had the potential to offer power. This encompassed organizations like the Mage Clans and Zakarum. Adria's main concern was whether these groups possessed power and if there was anything to be gained from them. As a witch, Adria frequently engaged in the use of unconventional healing methods, allowing her to combat diseases that other healers struggled to treat. It is possible that due to her own father's neglect and lack of affection, Adria displayed a rather cold-hearted demeanor. She willingly assisted peasants in terminating their pregnancies and showed no remorse when she learned about the fate awaiting her own daughter. Adria herself expressed the belief that daughters held little value. In her writings, she referred to Leah as "the vessel" and declared that although Leah was her biological child, she did not consider her as her daughter. Instead, she viewed her as Diablo's offspring.

Adria held a strong belief in her own worth, and she believed that her partnership with Diablo was a way for her to receive what she believed she deserved from destiny. Adria held some sympathy towards the khazra, considering their origins under the Vizjerei Clan. When the khazra rebelled against their creators, Adria acknowledged that any mage meeting their demise at the hands of goatmen had brought it upon themselves. She also held a negative view of Zakarumites, perceiving them as blindly devoted individuals, yet recognizing their expertise in interrogation. Adria was cautious about the dangers of demonic possession and was willing to collaborate with demons, but only under her own terms. However, she deemed angels as the most significant threat to humanity, having learned about the pact made during the Sin War where angels barely spared humanity. Over time, her animosity towards angels softened, understanding that one cannot fault a creature for their inherent nature. Similar to demons, she believed angels were bound to their own nature. Malthael was the only member of the Angiris Council she respected due to his abandonment of the council and realization of the futility in preventing Hell from corrupting humanity. Even towards humanity itself, Adria held contempt and regarded its eventual demise as a natural occurrence. During the Darkening of Tristram, Adria's accent matched the style of speech commonly used in Kingsport.

Biography[]

Past[]

Very little is known from Adria's past, mostly due to her usually avoiding the subject. She was the daughter of a merchant of kingsport named Severin, who neglected her, and after he died when their house was caught in a fire she vanished. Wandering in the wilderness, Adria was quickly labeled a witch by those she encountered. She eventually joined the Coven, an order of witches, along with Maghda, and the two eventually became the leaders of the order. Years later, Adria decided to leave the order, around the same time as the Darkening of Tristam.

Diablo[]

Adria moved to Tristam after hearing of the events transpiring there, building a hut in the outskirts of the town seemingly overnight. There, she offered her help to the adventurers who sought to fight the evil coming from the monastery in the edge of town, seeing this as an opportunity to get some gold and magical artifacts. Many of the villagers feared her, as she made no secret of being a witch. Deckard Cain was the only one who approached her, as the two exchanged their knowledge on arcane texts.

All adventurers who came to Tristam would either flee or die in the depths of the cathedral, but one day three adventurers returned, having defeated the source of the evil there: none other than Diablo, the Lord of Terror. One of them was Aidan, son of King Leoric, who was visibly traumatized by the experience, so he sought solace with Adria.

Between Diablo and Diablo III[]

When Adria looked at Aidan, she saw the image of Diablo on him. As it turned out, Aidan had plunged Diablo's soulstone into his head, in an attempt to contain Diablo's essence within him. The two spent many nights alone, and when Aidan left Tristam (now wearing the guise of the Dark Wanderer), Adria talked with Cain, telling him that Aidan left to the west. She also left the village shortly afterwards, along with the barmaid Gillian.

The two traveled to Caldeum, where Adria gave birth to Leah. She left Leah in Gillian's care and departed. During his travels in pursuit of the Dark Wanderer, Deckard Cain briefly met with Adria, which is when he learned of Leah's existence. After giving a scroll to Cain, Adria once again vanished.

Seven years after the destruction of the Worldstone at Mt. Arreat, Cain received a report on Adria's death. However, he doubted it, as he continued to sense Adria's presence nearby, though he was unable to locate her. He eventually learned that Adria passed through the Great Library of Caldeum, seeking information on the Desolate Sands and the ruins of the Cathedral of Light. Cain then realized she had been searching for the Black Soulstone.

Diablo III[]

During their travel to Caldeum, which had been sieged by Belial, the archangel Tyrael, the Nephalem and Leah find Adria in the city sewers, cornered by Belial's minion. After being rescued by them, Adria tells she planned to use the Black Soulstone to contain the essence of all the Great Evils and destroy them. This whole time she had successfully tracked the essences of Diablo, Baal, Mephisto, Andariel and Duriel, and thus only Belial and Azmodan were left. However, in order to find the Black Soulstone, she needed to revive Zoltun Kulle, the creator of the artifact. So, while Tyrael and the Nephalem set off after Zoltun Kulle and the Black Soulstone, Leah stayed with her mother, who taught her to control her magical powers.

After The group kills Azmodan on Bastion's Keep, Adria told they'd have to return to the keep, as to make the preparations to destroy the stone. However, once they get there Adria kills all the guards and incapacitates Tyrael, the Nephalem and Leah. She then reveals she's been working for Diablo ever since Tristam, as he planned to use the Black Soulstone to become the single Prime Evil, and that Leah was to be his new vessel, as she was his daughter. Adria then turns the Black Soulstone onto Leah, allowing Diablo to resurrect once again, this time as the embodiment of all Great Evils into one. Pleased with her services, Diablo orders Adria to leave, so she teleports through a portal while Diablo sets to invade the High Heavens.

Despite her betrayal, Nephalem once meets people whom coincidentally knows her, either prior to Diablo's invasion or her betrayal. They reveal that Adria used to be Maghda's friend and part of the Coven. Of course, when Nephalem rescues Adria and Adria later betray them, her torture was likely a mere ruse due to the fact that shemanipulate everyone all along.

Reaper of Souls[]

Adria's new form as true demon.

After Diablo is slain and the Black Soulstone is stolen by Malthael, the Nephalem goes after him, learning that Adria was the only one who knows where he is hiding. The party goes to the Blood Marsh, where Adria had gone to. They traverse the marsh, fought many monsters that happened to be Adria's creations, and reach the Ruins of Corvus, where they finally corner her.

She tells them Malthael went to the Pandemonium Fortress, but also tells she received a vision from Diablo telling of his return, and that it would be the Nephalem him/herself who would release him. She then throws herself into a pit of blood, reemerging as a Blood Demon and attacking the group, but she is ultimately killed as retribution of what she did.

Power and Abilities[]

Adria, a determined individual, had a deep understanding and connection with the ever-changing nature of magic. She possessed a natural talent and strong affinity for magic, although she insisted to The Nephalem that she had dedicated her entire life to studying it and that it was not something that came effortlessly to her. Some speculated that Adria heavily relied on Diablo for her magical abilities, but it was ultimately acknowledged that she possessed considerable power of her own. In addition to her mastery of magic, Adria also possessed the extraordinary gift of foresight.

In addition to her expertise in creating herbs, elixirs, oils, poisons, drawing, and potions, she also possessed a vast amount of knowledge in the realms of mysticism and demonology.

Trivia[]

  • In The Awakening, it is revealed that Adria, a character in the story, used to hold a respected position within the Vizjerei Clan. However, her standing within the clan drastically changed as she was eventually cast out and branded as a witch. The specific reasons behind her exile remain a mystery as Adria has consistently chosen not to disclose any information when questioned about her time with the Vizjerei. Interestingly, this aspect of her backstory was later retconned in the Book of Tyrael, which sheds new light on her past. According to this revised version, Adria actually joined the Coven at an early stage and only departed when the Darkening of Tristram event occurred.
  • The achievement titled "Really Most Sincerely Dead" in Hardcore Torment mode, which requires killing Adria without using crowd-control on enemies, could potentially be a clever homage to the iconic movie, the Wizard of Oz.
  • Adria is depicted in The Sanctuary Tarot Deck and Guidebook as the embodiment of both the Two of Cups and Queen of Pentacles cards.
